Barnsley Healthy Schools Scheme

The Barnsley Healthy School Scheme offers advice and support to schools to develop a whole school community approach to health improvement, reducing health inequalities, raising educational attainment and promoting social inclusion. It is a partnership between the Primary Care Trust and the Local Education Authority and received National accreditation in 2001.

What is a healthy school?

A healthy school is one that is successful in helping pupils to do their best and build on their achievements.

It is one that is committed to on-going improvement and development.

It promotes physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equipping pupils with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health.

A healthy school understands the importance of investing in health to assist in the process of raising levels of pupil achievement and improving standards.

It also recognises the need to provide both a physical and social environment that is conducive to learning.

A school can be healthy in so many ways. It might have:

  1. An active school council
  2. Action to stop bullying

  3. Bright clean buildings displaying pupils' work and achievements
  4. Opportunities to get further information and active about health issues
  5. Parents and the local community involved in improving the school

The Department of Health recommendation for adults:
at least 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days of the week. This physical activity should be of at least a moderate intensity – similar to brisk walking. Activity can be taken in bouts of 10 to 15 minutes, allowing for accumulation of activity throughout the day.

Dental Health

Barnsley’s Dental Health team launched a campaign this autumn aimed at improving parent’s awareness of the importance of good dental health for their children.

The campaign started with a series of workshops for community health visitors, midwives and nursery nurses so they can find out more about the dental packs that they will be handing to expectant mothers and parents with children under one year old.

Health visitors will be handing out a free-flow cup, a leaflet and a dental registration voucher for children borough wide aged between four months to 1 year.

Midwives are also backing the campaign and will be giving a pack to expectant mums containing a toothbrush and toothpaste, a leaflet and a dental registration voucher.

Christine Batty and Tracey Turner from the Dental Health team said: “We hope the campaign will raise awareness of the importance of dental health and ensure that correct and relevant advice is given out with the packs. The free-flow cups are especially good for very young children because they encourage a child to develop a sipping action when drinking, which leads onto establishing good eating patterns and helps avoid speech problems. “

If you would like more information about the packs or you would like the Dental health team to come and give a talk at your school or community group please telephone Christine Batty or Tracey Turner on 01226 777917 or email the team for more information.

Feeding your baby

Feeding the Future
Barnsley parents are working hard to help, support and encourage new mums to be able to breastfeed.

There is a growing number of peer support groups across the borough where mums help other mums and we even have dads offering advice and support to new dads.

If you would like some advice and support and you live in the Barnsley borough then check out the leaflets below for more information.
