The Fit for the Future Champions Award aims to encourage people to help their friends, relatives, neighbours and colleagues in their quest for a healthier lifestyle, in a bid to boost well –being in the town and increase Barnsley’s prosperity.

• Individuals
  This is open to individuals who have had a positive impact on their own health and that of those around them. They could have stopped smoking or joined a walking group and encouraged others to do so or they could be somebody who has helped and supported someone back to work for example. As you will have seen from this site, there are lots of ways we can improve our health and well-being and that of people around us.

• Groups (community, voluntary, etc)
  Do you know or belong to a group of people who encourage others to get involved and become part of the community? One of the groups that have become champions is a group of ladies in the Great Houghton area who attend a gentle exercise to music session. They encourage and support new members to take part and have fun whilst taking part in physical activity.
  
• Schools
  Does your school have a project, which has inspired and motivated the school community to think about their health? The Hill Primary School in Royston wrote and performed a rap for Fit for the Future called “Get Fit”. Your school may have introduced a healthy eating breakfast club or gone that extra step to encourage parents and families to get involved in healthy activities.

• Workplace
  Is your workplace a smoke free zone, do you have a healthy balance of food in your canteen, do you get any support or benefits such as reduced gym membership for example. Whether your workplace employs 1 or 1000 let us know how your workplace improves people’s lives and that of the community surrounding them

How to apply

You can nominate by completing download the nomination form and send it to us via freepost. There are no deadlines for nominations as our panel looks at them every month. You will receive a notification of receipt of your nomination shortly after we receive it.

What happens next?

We may need to contact you for further details. If your nomination has been successful we will contact you, usually in writing to confirm this and to arrange presentation of the Champion’s Award certificate and Fit for the Future badge. We like to congratulate Champions by inviting them to one of the presentation ceremonies that take place throughout the year. We can however post out the awards if the nominee prefers.
