Key Facts:

  • Smoking is the main cause of avoidable illness and premature death in Barnsley.
  • Children in low income families are three times more likely to be exposed to passive smoking at home than children from professional families.
  • Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight. Low birth weight is associated with serious health and developmental problems for babies.

Giving up smoking is the single most important thing anyone can do to improve his or her health.
You’re up to 4 times more likely to quit with your local specialist stop smoking team.

“I went to my local sessions and they really helped. The sense of achievement you get when you know you’ve done it is fantastic. People said I couldn’t do it and I did.”

Sadie, Darfield

“I wanted to get fitter and set a good example for my kids. The sessions were good because everyone was in the same boat and you new that there was someone else who was experiencing the same thing. They also helped me sort out which NRT was best for me.”

Lee, Thurnscoe

“I gave up for health reasons after talking to my GP. I’m glad I took that first step.”

Life’s A Drag

Life’s a Drag is a video put together by the Barnsley Stop Smoking Service and Barnsley Sure Start Plus aimed at local young people, and starring local young people from Kingstone School. The video explores issues young people in Barnsley face whilst growing up such as peer pressure and is designed to give them the information to be able to make educated decisions about their health. Email us for a copy of the video.

Anne, Thurnscoe – “Health reasons finally encouraged me to give up. It has given me a new lease of life and all I’d say to people is – it can be done”
